VAUGHAN, Ontario—Bausch + Lomb Corporation (NYSE/TSX: BLCO), a leading global eye health company, has announced that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service—in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency—has approved the world’s first single-use disposable flies. “The Covid-19 pandemic spurred a dramatic increase in fly anglers, and optometrists have reported a similar increase in eye strain cases among their patients,” said Luc Lafair, president, New Ventures, Bausch + Lomb. “The profile, colors, and overall visibility of traditional flies decrease with time,” Mr. Lafair went on to say, “and we believe this is a primary cause of eye strain for fly anglers.”

Using an innovative technology called Fishion, tiny, biodegradable optical elements ensure each fly is visible at up to one-hundred feet and can self-adjust its brightness and color to adapt to water clarity, cloud cover, and intrinsic light level. After one outing, anglers can simply throw the fly away, eliminating the need for fly patches and other bulky accessories.

The eye-health giant believes their single-use flies can provide a solution that is both health- and eco-friendly while operating at a price point that will enable the new wave of financially elite anglers to differentiate themselves on the river with accessories and equipment beyond the usual high-end waders, rods, and $400 line nippers.
